Code of Ethics for Reiki Masters and Reiki Practitioners

1: I treat my parents, partner, and children with respect for their individual needs and values.

  • I appreciate the support of my partner and family members on my life’s path, and the support I in turn offer them.
  • I value honesty and integrity in relationships.

2: I treat my students and/or clients with respect for their dignity, individual needs, and values.

  • I work with my students and/or clients to the best of my ability, without prejudice regarding their age, race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, physical abilities, or socio-economic background.
  • I value the trust between myself and my students and clients.
  • I do not misuse my position as Reiki Master/practitioner to initiate or enter into a sexual relationship with a student or client.
  • I allow sufficient time for the dynamic between both parties (power dynamics) to shift towards equality before considering a romantic relationship with a student or former client.

3: I respect the right of a student/client to choose their initiating Master or practitioner, as well as their right to follow their own path of healing.

  • I respect my client’s trust in their doctor or primary healthcare provider.
  • I support my students and clients without interference from my personal judgement. If I cannot do so, I will advise them to work with another Reiki Master, practitioner, or therapist.

4: I keep all information concerning a student or client confidential.

  • I do not disclose names or other personal details to third parties.
  • I hold everything said by the student or client during a course or session, and everything shared between us, in complete confidentiality.

5: I maintain a clear state of awareness.

  • I refrain from alcohol abuse and drug use.
  • I am aware that my judgement and professional conduct can be impaired by alcohol or drugs. Therefore, I abstain from alcohol before and during professional activities, and from drugs altogether (including so-called spiritual/ceremonial substances).

6: I continually expand my professional qualities, knowledge, and skills.

  • I know my own capabilities and limitations and state these accurately and honestly.

7: I maintain trust in Reiki, in my Reiki practice, in my Reiki Master, and in fellow practitioners.

  • I cultivate conscious and clear communication, loving-kindness, and honesty. I speak what is true, meaningful, and loving, and I refrain from speaking what is not.
  • I do my best to practise the five Reiki Precepts and to develop a deeper awareness of their value and meaning.
  • I honour my connection with the process greater than myself, recognising that healing is something I can give myself and learn from, but never control.
  • I support life rather than seeking to avoid death.

8: I respect the property of others, maintain my professional integrity, and refrain from financial misconduct.

  • I abstain from misconduct such as plagiarism, inappropriately withholding information, and making false or misleading statements.
  • I refrain from using the methods and disciplines of others professionally until I have truly studied and mastered them, and I always acknowledge their origin.

9: I acknowledge other disciplines and their practitioners.

  • If needed or desired, I will collaborate with other Reiki Masters/practitioners or with practitioners of other healing disciplines if this supports the student or client.
  • I refrain from slander, criticism, or disparaging remarks about other practitioners. However, I will be honest about my experience with potentially harmful effects of certain methods if asked, or if those methods are not compatible with Reiki.

10: I am responsible for all my decisions and actions as a Reiki Master or practitioner within society.

  • I recognise that all my actions and choices in behaviour and communication may potentially affect others; I teach by being an example myself.
  • I resolve actual or potential conflicts of interest promptly.
